Boots ‘n’ Flowers

At this wedding I shot yesterday, the bride and all her bridesmaids wore boots during the ceremony. When I saw this old red barn on the property, and the rustic-looking flower arrangements of the girls’ bouquets, I knew I had to tie all those together. The couple, Kaley and Derek, are country folk and I wanted their photos to reflect that. I shot this…

Entering the Ceremony

Finding a good vantage point from which to photograph both the bride and the groom as they enter the ceremony site (if it’s not in a church), can be a challenge. At this wedding there was a hill just above the seating area that afforded me a view of both angles. The groom and his groomsmen all entered first, then the bride and her bridesmaids….

Backlighting a subject

At this Deep Woods wedding the rain was coming down in buckets all day long. Since the wedding venue is obviously an important place to the bride and groom, I knew I had to get some shots that showed a little of the grounds, even if it was raining. Deep Woods has a covered patio area that was the perfect place to place my…

Portland wedding at night

This wedding, shot in Portland, took place in October and it was quite chilly once the sun went down. The couple chose the World Trade Center building as their venue so it was an easy walk down to Tom McCall Park, along the waterfront, where this fountain is.

Everybody!

This is another image from a wedding I shot on the University of Oregon campus. Again, I was able to get such a shot because I’d secured a 16′ ladder to the site the previous evening. The newlyweds wanted a shot of everybody, all the family and guests, in a single image. Being sixteen feet off the ground sure helped!

An emotional beginning

At this wedding, shot on the University of Oregon campus, I used a 16′ ladder to get the perspective I wanted. The couple wanted everyone to form a circle around them during the ceremony, leaving me with no angle with which to shoot. The night before the wedding I schlepped the ladder over to the site and U-locked it to a bike rack, knowing…

Light Bender

I love the last light of a summer evening. At this wedding, in Bend, the smoke from a few fires in the area made for some really warm light as the sun went down. I positioned the couple across the pond from me so I could get their reflection. Wanting to make sure I exposed for all that nice light, as well as to…

A Portland wedding

Almost half the weddings I shoot take place in the Portland area. This also includes the vineyards of McMinnville and Newberg, as well as points further east such as Hood River and Bridal Veil Lakes. The image shown here, however, is of a traditional church wedding in the city itself. I like the idea of people blowing soap bubbles as the newlyweds exit the…

More from Youngberg Hill

Going through some of my weddings at Youngberg Hill, a beautiful vineyard in McMinnville, I realized I should post some more photos. These are from Melissa and Daniel’s wedding. The weather was perfect: lots of textured clouds in the sky at first, followed by warm, golden sunlight towards evening.

Youngberg Hill wedding

Youngberg Hill, near the town of McMinnville, is one of Oregon’s premiere wedding venues. With stunning views and excellent facilities — not to mention their superb wine! — Youngberg Hill is a fantastic place to get married. This image is of the bride going over her vows. I applied a slight Gaussian blur in Photoshop, also allowing for the writing to remain sharp and…
