Anne & Ian on the beach

When I picked up my new speedlights (the Canon 600EX-RT), I was mostly excited about the built-in radio transmitters. However, they also have much better E-TTL (one way the flash interacts with the camera) than my previous flashes. This is one such example, using the flash as a something more than a bit of fill; I wanted to really light them up while maintaining…

She’s a handful!

This may be an old photography trick but Anne & Ian thought it’d be funny so I shot a few like this one, making it look like the groom was holding the bride in his hand. Another image from the McMenamins Sandtrap in Gearhart, Oregon.

Matt Emrich Photo, Oregon Coast Wedding

Here’s another one from this past Sunday, along the Oregon coast near Gearhart and The Sandtrap Hotel. The clouds had just lifted and the sky was a very nice shade of blue.

Happy 4th of July!

Anne & Ian were married at the McMenamins Sandtrap in Gearhart, Oregon this past Sunday. As we walked along the beach at sunset I knew I wanted to make this image for a July 4th posting:)

After the wedding…

I shot Stephen and Rachel’s wedding a few years ago and they were thrilled with the photos. The happy couple is expecting their first child in a few weeks and asked me to shoot a series of maternity photos. I wanted to include the ready-for-baby nursery in some of the images and this one is one of my favorites.

When to introduce noticeable post-processing

I used a slight gaussian blur on this image, then ‘painted’ the bride’s eyes back in at 100% of the original, sharper image, and the rest of her at around 80%. This particular bride likes soft-focus images so I did work like this on a few from her wedding at Whisper’n’Oaks last week. I used Adobe Lightroom for processing the RAW file and Adobe…

Cowgirl Up!

During the bridal portrait session last week, at Whisper’n’Oaks, this bride spotted a guest wearing a cowboy hat. She asked if she could put it on and I really like how it completed the image with the corral fence in the background. I lit this using three of Canon’s new 600EX-RT speedlights; they’re amazing!

The Barrel Room at King Estate

King Estate is a beautiful winery located between Eugene and Lorane, along Territorial Highway. The barrel room at King Estate is a great place for newlyweds to create a lasting, memorable photo session. The room is quite dark but I was able to position my lights behind some of the columns and out of the way. Once I’ve got this accomplished, I always tell…

The Day After

Erin and Ben were married, outside, during a torrential storm. This is fairly unusual for western Oregon in early September and they hadn’t made a backup plan. Needless to say, the ceremony was short and sweet and our planned sunset pictures were no longer possible. Since they were local, and it was a Sunday wedding, I agreed to cut my time short on the…

Classic

Emily & Luke were married on the Oregon campus in Eugene. Eschewing a tuxedo, Luke was all class in his gray suit (and, since tuxedos are technically evening wear and this was an afternoon wedding, that made perfect sense!).
