Using flash as the only light source

Haylie and Jonathan really wanted to get some great sunset pictures at their Whisper’n’Oaks wedding. Nature, however, had other ideas and the sunset was a little underwhelming. With the help of my trusty off-camera lighting I was still able to create a nice portrait using directional lighting.

Frame it!

The advent of Pinterest and other such sites have really fueled wedding photographers’ creativity. I cannot tell you how many times a bride has emailed me a long list of images she’d like to replicate; images she (or a bridesmaid) found on Pinterest. Quite a number of such requests are impossible to honor (since most such ‘found’ images were made at different venues, with a different dress, in a different season, etc), but this one was easy. The bride liked the idea so much she had her dad build this prop and I used it in a lot of ways, always creating fun moments. So, in case anyone out there is cruising Pinterest right now, and sees this image, feel free to pin it!

A Little Rain Must Fall

Heather and Lamar were married at Deep Woods Events in Veneta, Oregon and it was the rainiest day I’ve ever seen in Oregon, let alone photographed. Needless to say, the entire ceremony and reception got moved indoors. The only place to shoot, and still utilize some of the very nice outdoor scenery, was under a covered patio. I placed the bride and groom just out of reach of the rain, put a speedlight directly behind them, and fired away.

Quite a catch!

The sun had already set at this Whisper-n-Oaks wedding but I knew there was still a good half-hour of light left. That, combined with a little fill from my off-camera speedlight behind an umbrella, gave me this image.

Creative Cropping

This is another image from Tariq and Jared’s wedding at Deep Woods in Veneta, Oregon. The original image was shot vertically and the couple was facing each other. I rotated the image about 40 degrees and cropped it horizontally. Shooting in RAW with a Canon 5D Mark III gave me plenty of megapixels; I was able to crop the image by more than 50% and still give the couple a 10″ x 15″ final print.

Deep Woods wedding

Tariq and Jared were married at Deep Woods, near Veneta. The tall trees surrounding this place not only give the venue its name, they also provide wonderful dappled light in the late afternoon and evening.

I’ve used Animoto videos before, and they seem okay, so I thought I’d test one out here.

The Kissing Game, revisited

As I’ve mentioned in a few posts over the years, it’s always nice to get the bride and groom loosened up a bit when shooting their portraits. The cameras I carry have large lenses and flashes and it can be a little unnerving to have all that gear pointed at you over and over again 🙂 For this reason I employ a few ‘tricks’ designed to loosen up the newlyweds and make them forget there’s someone taking their picture. My favorite one is the kissing game: the bride has to try and kiss the groom in his ear and the groom has to resist with all his might…until he finally surrenders. Then I switch it up. By the time the game is over, the bride and groom are usually laughing and very relaxed…and I’ve gotten some great images!

That soft evening light

It’s rare for a bride to have time alone during the reception but the light was too good to pass up, in this instance, so I grabbed the bride and we ventured out to the lawn area of Dancing Deer Mountain.

A runaway bride

The bride wanted to incorporate the fence into her bridal party photos at this Whisper’n’Oaks wedding. I didn’t think she was going to try climbing to the top of it!
