Haylie and Jonathan really wanted to get some great sunset pictures at their Whisper’n’Oaks wedding. Nature, however, had other ideas and the sunset was a little underwhelming. With the help of my trusty off-camera lighting I was still able to create a nice portrait using directional lighting.

With the abundance of cameras available, on our phones and our tablets, it’s nice to see what a difference using a real camera can make. The ability to set whatever aperture I like, combined with Canon’s razor-sharp optics, make every image pop off the page. There was a time when the introduction of digital SLR cameras was anathema to old school film shooters; these old pros saw the digital revolution as cheapening their product and this was true, to an extent. However, as the technology improved so did digital imagery, to the point where digital 35mm has surpassed 35mm film. There may come a time when smartphones and tablets come equipped with a camera that can rival the big DSLRs I use, but that day isn’t here yet (there is a new, 41 megapixel camera-phone out right now but remember, having a lot of megapixels means nothing without having an excellent image sensor behind it; it’s like putting hi-octane racing fuel into an old Ford Pinto). This image was made at Dorris Ranch in Springfield, Oregon. I was unaware of Dorris Ranch until this future bride-and-groom suggested it to me; now it’s in my Top 5 places to shoot in Eugene/Springfield!

The advent of Pinterest and other such sites have really fueled wedding photographers’ creativity. I cannot tell you how many times a bride has emailed me a long list of images she’d like to replicate; images she (or a bridesmaid) found on Pinterest. Quite a number of such requests are impossible to honor (since most such ‘found’ images were made at different venues, with a different dress, in a different season, etc), but this one was easy. The bride liked the idea so much she had her dad build this prop and I used it in a lot of ways, always creating fun moments. So, in case anyone out there is cruising Pinterest right now, and sees this image, feel free to pin it!

Heather and Lamar were married at Deep Woods Events in Veneta, Oregon and it was the rainiest day I’ve ever seen in Oregon, let alone photographed. Needless to say, the entire ceremony and reception got moved indoors. The only place to shoot, and still utilize some of the very nice outdoor scenery, was under a covered patio. I placed the bride and groom just out of reach of the rain, put a speedlight directly behind them, and fired away.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, hasn’t it. Between preparing for my twin brother’s wedding, shooting a wedding where the bride and groom opted out of the Model Release portion of their contract, and working on all my other projects, time has slipped away. However, I shot a wedding last week in Sublimity, Oregon at the St Boniface Catholic Church and it was a blast. The church was a great venue and the hour-long ceremony was a great way for everyone to stay out of the rain! The reception was at Log House Gardens in Keizer, Oregon. The wedding party traveled via stretch limo from the church to the reception. I wanted to get a lot of good shots of the newlyweds inside the limo, and the 10 adult members of the wedding party, so I used all my external flashes and did just that. However, this meant I was nearly the last one to leave the church as the limo pulled out. The reception was about 20 miles away and I wanted to arrive in time to park my car, unload and set up all my gear, and still be in position to capture the bride exiting the limo. This meant I had to go, *cough*, slightly above the speed limit. Needless to say, when I flew by a state trooper aiming his radar gun right at me, I hoped I wouldn’t get a ticket. Apparently doing 78 in a 55 is not excessive on Highway 22 West 🙂
Anyway, the wedding party was a lot of fun and I spent an hour with them right around sunset. The rain had let up and the soft, warm evening light was perfect.

The sun had already set at this Whisper-n-Oaks wedding but I knew there was still a good half-hour of light left. That, combined with a little fill from my off-camera speedlight behind an umbrella, gave me this image.

When the sun is low in the sky it makes a great backlight, creating a very nice corona of light around the edges of my subjects. To recreate that effect in broad daylight, as well as to separate the subjects from the background a bit, I place a remote flash directly behind them. Such was the case with this couple, taken yesterday at Whisper’n’Oaks (a truly amazing venue!).

Deep Woods Events in Veneta, Oregon, does indeed have some very nice woods. They were a perfect filter for the bright sunshine of early evening in July.
