Dancing by the Lake

Julie and Nate wanted some ‘alone time’ after their ceremony at this King Estate wedding I shot awhile ago. I’m glad they invited me along; the light was perfect and the newlyweds were very at ease with one another.

The Rings

During an engagement session I always incorporate the ring into a few shots. In this e-session, featuring Trisha and Jordan, they both had their rings on so this shot was a no-brainer! This image was made on the bridge at the Clark Creek Campground, near Lowell.

Clark Creek Engagement

Trisha and Jordan are getting married later this year at the Clark Creek campground, 12 miles west of Lowell. It’s been a few years since I’ve been up that way so it was a real treat to see it again, especially on such a beautiful spring day in late March! This image was taken around 4 in the afternoon today.

A Golden Plum

This image isn’t exactly wedding related but the white blooms, and the limitless blue sky behind them, reminded me of a bride in her wedding dress: fresh and bursting with the promise of a new life ahead. I took this picture in my backyard a couple days ago.

Spring!

Spring is still a couple weeks away but we’re sure getting a nice preview today! This image is from an engagement session I did last spring, at Alton Baker Park.

A True Professional

I got a call today from an old friend I haven’t seen for awhile. He asked me how I made my living and I told him I was a professional photographer, specializing in weddings and related photography (engagement, maternity). He mentioned that he’d just gotten married and wished he’d known I was a photographer. Because he still lives on the east coast, where I grew up, I told him it was understandable that he didn’t find me online (since Google has now confined most web searches to the area closest to the user’s neighborhood, as determined by their IP addresses). He told me he found a photographer on craigslist and I was ready for the horror story. Sure enough, the photographer he found offered an unbeatable price, and all images on DVDs…but the pictures ranged from average to terrible. I asked him if the person he hired used any off-camera flash, or knew how to arrange groups and anticipate modern wedding moments. He said no; the guy didn’t even have a flash at all! Not wanting to cause my friend any more grief, I told him he’d gotten what he paid for and he’d probably saved enough money on photography that he must’ve had a really nice honeymoon 🙂 What I really wanted to tell him was he’d completely wasted his money! Yes, there are a plethora of inexpensive photographers out there and yes, a few of them use sites like craigslist and facebook to advertise their services. But a wedding day is a unique event in most people’s lifetime. Skimping on the photographer just doesn’t make any sense if you’re having a wedding where everything else is memorable (venue, caterer, wine, DJ, etc).

That’s my rant for the day :~}. There are plenty of folks out there with decent digital cameras. Wedding photography, however, is a profession and, like any other profession, it pays to hire a professional.

Let’s get this party started!

Emily and Luke were married on the University of Oregon campus. Truly a great couple, they also had a great bunch of friends who wanted nothing more than to help them celebrate their special day. I’ve seen couples get lifted into the air before, but never for so long! They were paraded around the dance floor more than once and they loved every minute of it. Rick, the DJ from Bass is Loaded, kept the party going long into the night.

The Big K Ranch

The Big K Ranch, near Elkton, Oregon is a year-round hunting lodge that also hosts the occasional wedding. I’m glad Heather & Jon decided to eschew the standard ceremony location (inside the dark, wood-paneled lodge) and move everything outside. While it was indeed hot and sunny, everyone was provided one of these pretty paper parasols…except the bride and groom! Their wedding party did a great job keeping them shaded. Ambient Light

While it’s true that a majority of my images are made using one or more flashes, there are times when the ambient light is so perfect no additional light is necessary. This warm sunset light only lasted for about three minutes. This image was shot with my 70-200mm lens since I really wanted to compress the elements in the frame. Doing so allowed me to shoot at f2.8 and still have a decent DOF.
