When Janina and I headed out to do her bridal portraits at Chateau Lorane, it was the middle of the afternoon on a hot, sunny day in late July. The best place for portraits at that time was in the dappled shade. Using two 0ff-camera speedlights (the Canon 600EX-RT), as well as one on-camera, it was easy to light up the deep shadows and still let the ambient light in the background, some 6-stops brighter, paint a beautiful background. Shooting at f2.8 also helps this image.

This is another image from Tariq and Jared’s wedding at Deep Woods in Veneta, Oregon. The original image was shot vertically and the couple was facing each other. I rotated the image about 40 degrees and cropped it horizontally. Shooting in RAW with a Canon 5D Mark III gave me plenty of megapixels; I was able to crop the image by more than 50% and still give the couple a 10″ x 15″ final print.

Every bride wants to look beautiful on her wedding day, and every mother wants to be there for the final moments before her daughter walks down the aisle. This was taken in the bridal room at The Seven Springs Ranch in Glide, Oregon (near Roseburg).

Heather and Lamar are getting married this September at Deep Woods (in Elmira, OR). They contracted me to shoot their engagement photos as well and they chose to have them done at the same place Lamar proposed, at Parker Falls, located way up Brice Creek in between Cottage Grove and Oakridge. The lighting was a little tricky but the hardest part was wading through the thigh-high water in order to put my light stand at the most flattering angle…this meant I had to place the stand directly in the flowing water and hope the large rock behind it would hold it in place! It did:)

Lyndsey and Brad were married at The Barn, near the town of Dardanelle. This was my first wedding shoot in Arkansas and I really enjoyed the whole weekend!

The advent of fast telephoto lenses really opened up a lot of creative possibilities in 35mm photography. Shooting a 70-200mm lens at a ‘fast’ aperture of f/2.8 allows me to choose exactly which parts of a frame I want in focus and which I purposely want to remain blurry. In this image, the bride and groom were standing in front of a rock wall at the base of Anderson Lodge in Washington state. It was rather a dreary day, with low clouds and drizzle, so there wasn’t much of a background to incorporate. Nor was there much of a foreground, just a concrete plaza and some old funky buildings. However, I’d walked the property earlier in the day and knew these lights in the trees would look good in this instance. Had I shot this image at f/8 or higher, there would’ve been too much detail in the foreground, distracting the eye from focusing on the newlyweds. As it looks now, you can’t even tell there is a tree supporting those lights; they look like they’re floating in space and they give a nice bit of warmth and contrast to the image.

As I’ve mentioned in a few posts over the years, it’s always nice to get the bride and groom loosened up a bit when shooting their portraits. The cameras I carry have large lenses and flashes and it can be a little unnerving to have all that gear pointed at you over and over again 🙂 For this reason I employ a few ‘tricks’ designed to loosen up the newlyweds and make them forget there’s someone taking their picture. My favorite one is the kissing game: the bride has to try and kiss the groom in his ear and the groom has to resist with all his might…until he finally surrenders. Then I switch it up. By the time the game is over, the bride and groom are usually laughing and very relaxed…and I’ve gotten some great images!

Ashley and Chris were married at Bridal Veil Lakes, near Multnomah Falls. It rained most of the day but the sun came out as the couple was making their way down the bridal path. I love how ethereal the light was here. You can see more from this wedding via this link.

Brian and Ashleigh have a wonderful house on Lake Lanier, some 40 miles north of Atlanta, and they chose their backyard as the site for their ceremony. I’d say it was a pretty good choice. This image is from just after the ceremony; the newlyweds wanted some ‘alone time’ out on their dock and I was invited to come along as well. The sun was just setting when the wind picked up (it’s a lake, after all!) and Ashleigh’s veil lifted perfectly in the wind.
