Planning your wedding?

I’m starting to get inquiries for 2015 weddings and thought I’d put up a few links to some helpful sites. If you haven’t heard of Etsy, it’s a great place to shop for everything wedding related (or to simply get really cool ideas). The same goes for Pinterest. I have a few Pinterest pages; one for wedding photography and one for wedding cakes. 2015 is just around the corner so it’s never too early! This image is from a wedding I shot at Silvan Ridge, in Lane County’s wine country along Territorial Highway.

I love my iPhone camera!

As a professional photographer who’s had to overcome the ever-increasing number of wedding guests who stand up during the ceremony so they can get ‘the shot’ with their iPhones, I must say I do love the camera on my own iPhone. I’ve become enamored of the Pano feature. This image was taken in Bandon, along the southern Oregon coast. The high overlook jutted out far enough that I knew a panoramic image would look good here, since my immediate foreground wouldn’t look unnaturally distorted. The first image is the actual photo; the second one is how it looks in the large frame at my house (the frame is 5′ by 16″).

Diamonds in the Rough

At this Diamond Woods wedding I shot this past Saturday, Terra and Ryan were ready to party with their friends but I wanted to get some last sunset pictures before it was too late. With my 2nd shooter–Jacob Mockbee–holding my off-camera flash I was able to create this image. Then it was party time!

Spring Fling

At this Arkansas wedding I shot last year, at a place called Twin Oaks Ranch, the groomsmen were more than happy to give the groom the scare of his life as they tossed him high in the air. I love how the groom is still holding his ‘relaxed’ pose…

The Big One

Rich and Jesse made sure everyone knew they were meant for each other in this late-night, post-reception group photo. The reception was at a place called Log House Gardens, near Salem. Once the sun had set, and the temperatures cooled down a bit, people were more inclined to move back outside. I positioned one off-camera speedlight on a stand, camera-right, diffused through a large 36″ umbrella. I wanted to make the people ‘pop’ a little bit so I underexposed the ambient light by a half stop and increased my speedlight by one stop.

One Sweet Ride

Kelly and Courtney were married in Portland, at the Gerding Theater (aka ‘The Armory’), which is an amazing venue right in the heart of the city. Courtney drove his classic Ranchero right up to the front door to escort Kelly away for their honeymoon.

Sunset at Beckenridge

Janet & Scott were married at Beckenridge Vineyard in Dallas, Oregon. The sun had gone down but I was still out shooting. Wanting to capture the sunset light, but still show the newlyweds well, required a little off-camera flash.

Under the Lights, at Silvan Ridge

Lane County has so many great vineyards, it’s hard to see them all in one day. I recommend staying at The Blue Rooster B&B and making a weekend out of it. One of my favorite places to photograph weddings is at Silvan Ridge (formerly called Hinman Vineyards), directly across the road from Sweet Cheeks. This couple, Krista and Brian, flew in from Chicago and had a few days to make the place their own. Brian installed these lights over the dance floor and I thought that was a great idea. This was taken late at night, after almost everyone else had gone home, and it was just the bride and groom alone for the first time all day.

More from the Oregon Coast

The afternoon light at this Yachats wedding along the Oregon Coast was a little flat, but it also gave off a unique yellow hue. This was due to the yellow tones of the sand being reflected by the overcast skies. I decided not to use any artificial lighting for this shoot. First off, it was extremely windy and any off-camera lights would have been difficult to sustain. Secondly, I liked the ambient light, the yellowy glow.

Oregon Coast wedding, great light!

As I was walking with Amy and Jeff, along the Oregon Coast, a huge ray of light appeared, shining directly onto the newlyweds. What a treat!
