The wedding I shot this past weekend took place at Loloma Lodge, 44 miles up the McKenzie River. There are a great many trees there, which means lots of open shade for group photos. Using one speedlight mounted on a stand with a large white umbrella, I attached another speedlight to my camera for some slight fill. There was also some natural sunlight coming in that made for great highlights in everyone’s hair, and added depth. Also, most importantly, the group was fully engaged with the shoot and we had a great time!

Allison and Josh were married at Mt Hood Organic Farm this past Saturday. Located 15 miles south of Hood River, the farm has a spectacular view of Mt Hood and is a great wedding venue.
I’m just now going through all the images in Lightroom and have picked out a few favorites for this post.
And here’s another one from that day:

It’s that time of year again; the time of year here in western Oregon when we have long nights with lots of golden sunsets. Danielle & Brian were married at The Pavilion at King Estate.

When I picked up my new speedlights (the Canon 600EX-RT), I was mostly excited about the built-in radio transmitters. However, they also have much better E-TTL (one way the flash interacts with the camera) than my previous flashes. This is one such example, using the flash as a something more than a bit of fill; I wanted to really light them up while maintaining a rich, textured background. This is another of a series from The Sandtrap in Gearhart, Oregon.

I shot Stephen and Rachel’s wedding a few years ago and they were thrilled with the photos. The happy couple is expecting their first child in a few weeks and asked me to shoot a series of maternity photos. I wanted to include the ready-for-baby nursery in some of the images and this one is one of my favorites.

King Estate is a beautiful winery located between Eugene and Lorane, along Territorial Highway. The barrel room at King Estate is a great place for newlyweds to create a lasting, memorable photo session. The room is quite dark but I was able to position my lights behind some of the columns and out of the way. Once I’ve got this accomplished, I always tell the bride and groom that I’m ‘just metering’ for a bit and I ask them to do whatever comes naturally while I take a few ‘test shots.’ What I don’t tell them until later is that my lighting has already been fine-tuned and that all those ‘test shots’ are real. This allows me to create candid moments that have the lighting and background that I’ve chosen for optimal images:)

Erin and Ben were married, outside, during a torrential storm. This is fairly unusual for western Oregon in early September and they hadn’t made a backup plan. Needless to say, the ceremony was short and sweet and our planned sunset pictures were no longer possible. Since they were local, and it was a Sunday wedding, I agreed to cut my time short on the wedding day, leaving as soon as the cake had been cut, and come back the next evening. The light was much better then, and Erin’s dress had already gotten quite dirty, so these photos (taken at Erin’s parents’ house in Cottage Grove) were easy and fun.

Emily & Luke were married on the Oregon campus in Eugene. Eschewing a tuxedo, Luke was all class in his gray suit (and, since tuxedos are technically evening wear and this was an afternoon wedding, that made perfect sense!).

Whenever I’m shooting all the traditional family portraits I always try and inject some fun into the group(s). Everyone wants to look good in pictures but nobody wants to have to stare at a camera for a long time and try and hold a natural smile. For this reason I like to mix it up and create situations where everyone is relaxed and having fun. This shot was fun, and everyone liked it, but more importantly, the next series of images featuring this group showed a lot more relaxed expressions.
