At this Denver wedding I shot a few weeks ago, the weather turned nasty at the last minute and everything (photos, ceremony, reception) had to take place indoors. I was glad I’d scouted out the venue beforehand and found this upstairs library; I knew this image was going to be a fun one. There was also a full-sized craps table which I used in some other wedding party photos. It’s important to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather, and to scout out a venue if you haven’t already shot there at least once before. I did both in this instance and it paid off later. We did do some outside photos late in the evening…when the snow was coming down!

Beckenridge Vineyard is located near Dallas, Oregon. They take great pride in their wine, even going so far as to ask their guests not to bring any footwear that’s been worn at other vineyards! I guess this helps keep out unwanted pests and microorganisms that might upset the grape stock. I found a similar attitude from a customs agent in Auckland, but never before in the States 🙂
Leanne and Ryan were married on a gorgeous summer day at Beckenridge and most everyone had on brand new shoes. I did a custom sepia conversion in Adobe Lightroom.

Tyler and Amy were married at Rocky Butte Park, in Portland. Tyler was just about to be deployed overseas and wanted to make sure he was married before he left.

Vinnie and Valerie were married in Scottsburg, Oregon (along the Umpqua River). While posing them in the tall grass and hammock that fronted the river, I noticed this tree swing on the adjacent property. Too perfect!
Using some on-camera fill flash I was able to freeze Valerie, just as Vinnie had given her a push, while using a slow enough shutter speed to let in the ambient light and give it some motion blur as I panned the bride.

I always like to include a collection of images of the bride’s bouquet. This one was taken at Bridal Veil Lakes, about an hour east of Portland. There are many ways to do this and one of my favorite is to have the groom stand behind the bride and have them both clasp the bouquet together. I then frame the image so only their hands (with rings!) and the flowers are showing, with a little bit of wedding dress and tuxedo in the background. Whenever I start this sequence I always tell the couple they can relax their faces, since I’m only focusing on their hands. I happened to look up during this particular shot and saw very nice, unguarded expressions on both their faces. No time for fill flash, or to adjust my metering for the bright sky behind them, but I got the shot. They loved it!

I wish I could remember the name of that park in NW Portland! (where I took Jenni and Johnny for their engagement photos) This fence is made up of old railroad tracks, all rusted out. This just in: I remembered the name of that park. It’s called Tanner Springs, and it’s between 10th & 11th and Northrup & Marshall.

Jenni & Johnny wanted their engagement photos shot in Portland. Since it was 103 degrees that day I decided we’d better wait until just after sunset and that we’d better find somewhere near water. This park, in NW Portland, fit the bill.

I’ve shot perhaps a dozen weddings at the Country Inn and they’ve all been great fun. This one was no exception. I really like how the color of the flower petals (thrown by the guests) contrasts with the black and white of the bride and groom. I also edited this shot with selective coloring, leaving just the petals in color, and it turned out great.

Emmy and Sam were married in Pocatello, Idaho. Both are members of the Idaho State track team and were able to use the track for their ceremony. After the nuptials were finished I asked them to prove who was the fastest. Emmy won! Must be the shoes 🙂

When Devon and Brian hired me to shoot their wedding this past summer, they told me they were looking for a strict PJ approach. Not pajamas, of course! PJ stands for Photo Journalism. Many couples tell me they want their weddings shot in the PJ style but most end up expecting a lot of traditional portraits as well 🙂 Devon and Brian were the exception. Since I normally shoot weddings all day anyway, a majority of my images are already candid. However, just shooting away, employing the Spray’n’Pray method of capturing great images is not my idea of candid photography! I like to look for angles and foregrounds that help frame an image and tell a story. Since Devon owns her own nursery business, I thought including some of her handpicked flowers would be fun.
