One For The Road

Wheat fields in the late summer are some of my favorite spots to photograph, especially when there’s a beautiful couple nestled inside. Summer is coming!

Lighting up a rainy day

At this Deep Woods wedding in Veneta, the rain didn’t let up all day. Not only did the ceremony have to be moved indoors, the photography was limited as well; naturally, the bride didn’t want to walk through the woods in her wedding dress! A small patio just outside the reception hall was all I needed. The venue’s wooded backdrop was clearly visible in the background and I had plenty of lights to make the bride stand out. I positioned the bride just under the edge of the overhang and put a speedlight behind her, out in the rain. I really like how that combination made the raindrops visible, as well as providing some nice rim lighting that separated the bride from the darker background. It was completely dark on the patio, under the overhanging roof, so I used another off-camera speedlight to light up the front of the bride, as well as a bit of fill light from my on-camera speedlight (all lights were the Canon 600EX-RT). Without the addition of these extra lights it would have been impossible for me to expose properly for both the bride and the deep woods behind her. Glad I had them available!

Late in the Evening

Whisper’n’Oaks is one of my favorite wedding venues in Lane County. The property is going through some remodeling this year, as I understand, but I cannot imagine what Donna (the owner) can possibly do to improve it!

This image was made just after the sun had set. Haylie & Jonathan had wanted to do some wedding photos in the wheat fields surrounding the property but all the wheat had been harvested the week before. Luckily, as the name Whisper’n’Oaks implies, there were plenty of other great locations to use. Again, the use of an off-camera flash was crucial here in lighting my subjects. The winds were so strong my softboxes wouldn’t stay up, so I had to use a bare speedlight, but Canon makes a great product and the 600EX-RT was up to the task.

Late afternoon sun

The late afternoon sun at Alton Baker Park was the perfect backlight for this shot. As I always do when I shoot, I only used available light. This means I used all the light I had available: the low-angled sun behind the couple for that nice ‘rim light’ and two off-camera speedlights pointed at the couple so their faces were visible (‘fill light’). I wanted to recreate the same light our brains would see in this scene so the off-camera speedlights were crucial; without them the couple would have merely been a silhouette. Had I exposed for their faces only, the background would’ve gone completely white, losing the context of the setting sun. By punching in just enough light of my own I was able to make the image appear more realistic. Lighting 101!

Winter has set in but summertime, with those wonderful balmy evenings, is just around the corner. If you’ve just gotten engaged, congratulations! Wedding dates are booking up quickly; reserve yours as soon as possible at one of the many spectacular wedding venues we have here in Oregon. This image was taken at Mt Hood Organic Farms near Hood River, Oregon.

Looking for the perfect dress

I get to see a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ moments during a wedding. The bride is almost always surrounded by her bridesmaids and her mother, who dote on her and make sure she’s looking her best. The groom, on the other hand, is often left alone, or with just his best man as they try and decide how long they can wait to put their suits on. I created this juxtaposition from a wedding I shot near Atlanta this past year.

Honeymoon Bound

Devin and Coty are a very playful, and very photogenic, couple. During most of our portrait sessions, Coty would ham it up and Devin played right along; it was great! Whenever the groom wears a full-length tie I always have the bride grab it and pull on it at some point. This normally lightens the mood and makes the bride and groom appear more natural afterwards. Mostly I’m looking for what happens after the tie has been grabbed, once the couple has forgotten about me and are just being themselves. In this instance, however, the couple were super-relaxed around the camera all day and it shows.
