Photo edges

When I first began shooting digital, back in 2004, I thought it’d be cool to add some old-fashioned ‘film’ edges to my images. I never saw any I liked, however, and that idea kind of faded away. This morning, while editing a set of engagement photos I shot a few days ago, I thought I’d see how some of them looked with those kinds of edges. A google search got me to a page that has 50 of them, royalty-free, so I’m posting a couple of them here. These images were taken near Brice Creek, about an hour southeast of Eugene, Oregon. The first image has a brushed border and the second image has a filmstrip border. I’m going to look at them again in a few days to see if they still look cool.

Team Bride

This bride and her bridesmaid were all cheerleaders together in high school. I was amazed how fast the Maid of Honor was able to leap up to the top here!

Ring detail, Sarver Winery wedding

Once a couple becomes married, it’s rare to see their rings together. It’s also rare to see any inscriptions that may be inside the groom’s ring. Also, they’re so shiny and new on the wedding day, it’s a great time to photograph them. I even had one bride use one of my images from her wedding to help with an insurance claim after her ring was stolen!

Shotgun Wedding

When I saw this rifle I knew I had to use it in a few shots. This image is a play on similar images I’ve created, except I never had a bride holding a real gun before!

Newlyweds!

Kaley and Derek braved this past Saturday’s rain showers and I’m glad they did. This shot was taken just before the ceremony, right after the First Look.

Boots ‘n’ Flowers

At this wedding I shot yesterday, the bride and all her bridesmaids wore boots during the ceremony. When I saw this old red barn on the property, and the rustic-looking flower arrangements of the girls’ bouquets, I knew I had to tie all those together. The couple, Kaley and Derek, are country folk and I wanted their photos to reflect that. I shot this with my 70-200mm f2.8 lens, wide open. I chose this lens because I like how it compresses distances and the bokeh at f2.8 is superb.

Backlighting a subject

At this Deep Woods wedding the rain was coming down in buckets all day long. Since the wedding venue is obviously an important place to the bride and groom, I knew I had to get some shots that showed a little of the grounds, even if it was raining. Deep Woods has a covered patio area that was the perfect place to place my subjects. It was quite dark there, with no artificial lighting and a very dark day outside as well. Like I always say, however, I love using all available light so I brought out the lights I had available with me. Placing one behind the bride allowed me to light up her hair and separate her from the background a bit. Another light was setup to the bride’s right, set at a lower power and my last speedlight was on my Canon 5D3. No more dark and dreary day!

Everybody!

This is another image from a wedding I shot on the University of Oregon campus. Again, I was able to get such a shot because I’d secured a 16′ ladder to the site the previous evening. The newlyweds wanted a shot of everybody, all the family and guests, in a single image. Being sixteen feet off the ground sure helped!

An emotional beginning

At this wedding, shot on the University of Oregon campus, I used a 16′ ladder to get the perspective I wanted. The couple wanted everyone to form a circle around them during the ceremony, leaving me with no angle with which to shoot. The night before the wedding I schlepped the ladder over to the site and U-locked it to a bike rack, knowing I’d need it the next day. Once the ceremony began I had an excellent vantage point. This image was taken with my 70-200mm lens, shot at 200mm at f2.8. I really like the emotions being expressed here. The couple wrote their own vows and they were heartfelt!

Light Bender

I love the last light of a summer evening. At this wedding, in Bend, the smoke from a few fires in the area made for some really warm light as the sun went down. I positioned the couple across the pond from me so I could get their reflection. Wanting to make sure I exposed for all that nice light, as well as to catch some of their reflection, I underexposed about a stop or so, then used an off-camera flash (positioned on camera-right) to add just enough light to make the couple stand out. This, combined with a fast lens shot at a long distance, helped complete the image.
